What COVID Taught Us About Digital Platforms and Small Business Survival

Using real data from Alibaba’s Ele.me, this study shows food delivery platforms helped small businesses survive COVID lockdowns by boosting sales, jobs, and access to food and medicine. Strict lockdowns reduced new businesses, but chain stores and multi-app sellers proved more resilient, highlighting digitalization as key to long-term business survival.
