UNIX: The Untold Story
Big thanks to Emergent for sponsoring this video — https://emergent.sh/?via=codesource Describe your app in plain language, and Emergent’s AI agents build, test, and deploy the full stack for you — frontend, backend, payments, and all. This is the story of Unix. In the hallways, the name started as a joke. If the failed behemoth was MULTICS, this one was UNICS—“uni-plexed” rather than multi-plexed. The joke sharpened into Unix. He sketched the pieces. A hierarchical file system. Little i-nodes to store the facts. Devices exposed as files so the same read and write calls touched terminals and disks alike. A way to create work with fork, then replace it with exec. The PDP-7 didn’t have much memory, but it could juggle users if the code stayed small. 00:00 The Attic at Murray Hill 03:38 Sponsor: Emergent 04:31 The Spread: Berkeley and Beyond 06:16 The Unix Wars 08:39 Legacy and the Pattern That Lasted 10:41 The Pattern Lives On For Sponsorship Enquiries contact - sponsorships@codesource.i
