A game that earns $10M on Unreal Engine pays $450,000 in royalties. The same game on Godot pays $0. That's a real calculation from the GDC 2026 data , not a hypothetical. Game developers have been dealing with platform lock-in longer than most of us in web development. And the patterns they've discovered apply directly to every choice we make about frameworks, cloud providers, and deployment platforms. The royalty trap Unreal Engine is free to use. You pay nothing until your game earns $1M. Then Epic takes 5% of gross revenue above that threshold. Forever. This sounds reasonable when you're starting out. Most games never earn $1M.
