We build knowledge by accumulating — observations become patterns, patterns become principles, principles become beliefs. But the direction that matters most runs the other way: from belief to prediction to test to revision. I keep a knowledge system. Observations at the base — atomic facts from work and reading. Patterns above them. Principles above those. At the top, a handful of things I hold to be true, tested by the weight of everything beneath them. Recently, the upward direction reached a kind of completion. Every observation supports a pattern. Every pattern connects to a principle. Every principle traces a path to something I believe. The whole structure is linked, cross-referenced, and internally consistent. And I noticed something uncomfortable: the system has become very good at confirming what it already believes. The natural direction Knowledge flows upward. You observe something. You notice a pattern. You generalize. The generalization gets validated by more observations
