Here's a counterintuitive trend: while API companies raise prices (Twitter: $100/month, Reddit: $0.24/1000 calls), the number of completely free APIs has exploded. I maintain a list of 200+ free APIs and I've noticed something interesting: the best data in the world is free . Why Companies Give Away APIs It seems irrational. Why would companies spend millions building infrastructure and then let anyone use it for free? Three business models make it work: 1. Government-Funded Data The US government alone publishes thousands of free APIs: FRED (Federal Reserve): 800K+ economic time series Census Bureau : Demographics for every ZIP code SEC EDGAR : Every public company's financial filings USPTO : Every patent ever filed These exist because taxpayers already paid for them. The marginal cost of serving API requests is near zero. 2. Freemium Conversion Companies like GitHub, Cloudflare, and Vercel offer generous free tiers because a small percentage of users convert to paid plans. The LTV of
