Project Management Through Neuroscience: Dopamine, Cortisol, and Deadlines
"Why does productivity increase as deadline approaches?" "Why do we procrastinate on some tasks and can't even start them?" These phenomena are all related to neurotransmitters in our brain. When deadline is far, it feels leisurely. But as deadline approaches, focus suddenly increases and productivity rises. On the other hand, some tasks are hard to start no matter how important. Why do these phenomena occur? Today, we look at project management from a neuroscience perspective . What if the key to project success is in your brain? Dopamine: Fuel of Motivation Dopamine is a 'reward prediction' hormone. Dopamine Secretion by Task Size : Small task: Effort 1, Reward 10, Dopamine 15 (efficient) → Small sense of achievement Medium task: Effort 5, Reward 30, Dopamine 25 → Satisfaction Large task: Effort 20, Reward 50, Dopamine 20 (inefficient) → Achievement mixed with fatigue Impossible task: Effort 100, Reward 0, Dopamine -30 → Frustration and avoidance Small tasks have the highest dopamine
