OpenAI's trust problem is getting worse — here's your local plan B

This week, a massive New Yorker investigation landed with 1400+ upvotes on Hacker News and 30,000+ on Reddit. The piece details how OpenAI's Sam Altman allegedly lobbied against the same AI safety regulations he publicly supported, while pursuing billions from Gulf state autocracies. Around the same time, a separate story titled "The problem is Sam Altman" surfaced — claiming that OpenAI insiders themselves don't trust their own CEO. Then came reports that OpenAI execs had at one point discussed "What if we sold it to Putin?" as part of a bidding war scenario between China, Russia, and the US.
