
Managing Expectations in the AI Era
Here is a conversation I suspect a lot of engineering leaders are having right now, in one form or another. A stakeholder - a product director, a founder, a VP of sales - has read something about how AI makes developers ten times more productive. They have seen demos of entire applications being scaffolded in minutes. They have heard that GitHub Copilot cuts coding time by thirty percent. And now they are sitting across from you asking why, if all of that is true, the roadmap looks basically the same as it did last year. It is a fair question. And the honest answer is complicated enough that most engineering leaders either oversimplify it in ways that create bigger problems later, or they get defensive in ways that damage the relationship.
