
Do you actually need a separate bank account as a freelancer? (UK)
Short answer: HMRC doesn't legally require it. But you should get one anyway. Here's why. The legal position As a sole trader in the UK, there's no legal requirement to have a separate business bank account. HMRC doesn't mandate it. You can run everything through your personal account. But "you can" and "you should" are very different things. Why a separate account matters 1. Tax returns become 10x easier When all business income and expenses flow through one account, your tax return is a simple bank statement export. No scrolling through Deliveroo orders trying to remember which lunch was a client meeting. 2. HMRC investigations If HMRC investigates you (it happens), they can request bank statements.
