I have watched seasoned real estate professionals stumble over land area conversions in meetings. It seems straightforward until you are standing on an irregularly shaped lot trying to figure out how many square feet you are actually dealing with, and whether the listing's acreage claim holds up. The acre is one of those units that everyone uses and almost nobody truly understands. What an acre actually is One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. That number is not arbitrary. It comes from the original definition: an acre was the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day, standardized to a strip one furlong (660 feet) long by one chain (66 feet) wide. 660 x 66 = 43,560. Most people have no intuition for 43,560 square feet because it is not a round number and does not correspond to any common shape.
